From a Vermont Ski Chalet to the Beach . . .
All the wood in this home had been a natural dark cedar.
As you zoom in on the first photo, you can still see the window frames next to
the new cabinetry around the fireplace, and around the windows at the end of
the room. It felt like you were in Vermont. Yet when you walked out the front
door you could see the water and walk to it in three minutes!
The grade of wood that was used for the fireplace required that it be painted.
Staining was not an option. My client hated the dark wood, so we used the
opportunity to change the color of the wood in the entire house.
All the cedar trim was rough side out so it would not look nice painted. The
cost of replacing all the trim was too much – so this was the plan: I would sand the cedar trim so it was smoother. Then nothing would be painted.
All would be made the color of the white cedar, which is a pale golden color
and has a soft beachy feel. I would make the new wood around the fireplace look
like beautiful oak with the same soft golden patina.
You can see the window trim now looks the same as the wood around the fireplace.
The same treatment was done to all the door casings and baseboards as well. The
color also marries nicely with the rest of the decor. The house now feels like
the beach.
While difficult to view in a photo, you can see the graining in the third photo.
I balanced the grain from one side to the other. With the same interest that
you’d get from different cuts of wood.
